Big Change in teaching assignment!Starting this year 2018/19 I will no longer be teaching at Southwood. Due to increased number of sections at many schools we music teachers had a little shuffle. I will be at Discovery most of the week and one morning each week I will travel to Glenwood to teach three classes there! It has been sad to leave the family of kids, staff, and parents at Southwood where I taught for 18 years but have enjoyed getting to know the Glenwood family of staff and kids!
Welcome to the new school year! I will be updating the site as September goes along.
Two things to note right away: 1. Music Programs are early this year. Discovery is November 3 and Southwood is November 5! We will start working on material for those programs next week. 2. Fifth graders will be learning a new instrument this year. 4th graders learn the recorder and Fifth graders will be learning the UKULELE! I am so excited to introduce this instrument as we continue to develop their musicianship this year. Stay tuned as more information comes home and appears on the website about this exciting new program. Hello all! Our music program is coming up fast! April 22nd at 6:30pm. We'll sing at the East Kentwood Hogh School Auditorium. It will feature all students from young 5s up to 5th grade. There will be singing, dancing, and playing of instruments. This year there will be a finale number with all students singing the new Southwood school song. The song was just written and we have been learning it these last few weeks! Please help you children practice by looking on the grade level pages for any practice tracks that might be there. Thanks for all you do. I have to cancel ukulele club this week. I will be gone from class on Thursday and Friday to be part of a music conference. I am presenting three sessions over three days! I am sharing movement activities and technology ideas for music teachers. We will resume ukulele club next week January 23. Thanks and see you then! Thanks to all for getting your money in to purchase a recorder if you needed one! This was the smoothest year yet. The Order has arrived from Meyer Music and I'll be handing them out during your next music class! Remember, if your money was turned in past the due dates, I ordered you the color ivory. Otherwise, expect to receive the color choice you requested.
Now, some resources for you: The belt songs There are some resources here on my website to help with your recorder skills! Echo Challenge To work on your audiation of tonal patterns ( a must for really playing the recorder with understanding) go to the Fourth Grade page under the Grade Levels tab. Here there are some patterns notated that will play for you. sing them back with the syllables under the notes. The more you sing them the sooner you'll just know them and be able to audiate them when ever you wish. Click here to go there now. I had not heard this until recently! What a cool combination of styles! It's a whole new skill to beat box with your lips then switch those lips to make a flute sound! For examples of this check out the classroom tab on this website then the instrument of the month option. The man's name is Greg Pattilo. Awesome!
I am having a fantastic time with all the students this year! I am finding great singers, movers and beat keepers! Everyone must have been practicing all summer. Look around at the site and come back often! I will post cool stuff as we go through the year. The instrument of the month and the composer of the month will change each month.
Take a look 4th and 5th graders at the grade level pages. There are some patterns to practice to improve your tonal vocabularies. Come in and sing them for me som |
